Politician talks sense?! And new sound project...
For those of you who are frustrated with the way politicans speak about education, testing, and accountability, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland offers some refreshing discourse in this Columbus Dispatch news piece.
Recycling sounds, voices, and other digital material opens up countless possibilities in constructing meaning. I've been lucky to practice some sound editing skills at graduate school this summer. Listen to this sound collage/commentary about NCLB.

I can see why you like Strickland's commentary, but student differences, while significant, are less important than curriculum design ( which can be flexible) and teacher excellence. Excellent teachers have always recognized and adapted to student differences. The problem is that truly excellent teaching is not well understood and therefore not effectively promoted. If Strickland actually knows what he is doing, he will find a few dozen teachers known to be excellent and ask them questions. There are teaching methods that incorporate rigor and learning differences- finding strong teachers who can employ these methods is the most critical - and difficult - aspect of educational change. Talk is indeed cheap.
